In Backgammon Avoid Them or Be Avoided

Gambling players are not really barbaric beings, contrary to the belief of many others. Gambling players have their own set of conducts while at play. Backgammon in particular should be played by gambling players with most respect with others. For example, these are some things that a respectable gambling player should never do in playing backgammon:

- Pointing out your opponent's mistakes and stating that you would not have committed that yourself. You are achieving nothing here but insulting your opponent. This just shows how little you think of other gambling players. Remember that nobody's perfect, even you. You wouldn't want other gambling players to insult you, right?

- Telling another gambling player who beat you that he was very lucky. This implies that you do not believe that he's a good decent player. Consequently, you will appear to think that you do not believe he could have won without his luck - that his skills are no match for yours.

- Saying that your opponent is very fortunate he did not lose a backgammon because you just won a gammon instead. There is no point in talking about something that did not happen, so why bother? Especially if it just insults the other gambling player. Next time win a backgammon in place of a gammon instead of just talking about it so much. Walk the talk. You will gain more respect by acting on it, not talking all night long.

- Telling your opponent how great it feels to have won amidst all those poor dice rolls. If you say this to the other gambling player, it means that you think highly of yourself, that you do not need luck to win, unlike him or her. You already won, there is no need to boast this much.

- Making disturbing noises and movements while the other gambling player is thinking of his next move. It would be in poor taste to do this since you are obviously trying to distract him from coming up with a good move. Even if you really are bored because you think he is taking too much time, do not produce disturbances because it would only take him longer to finish his thinking. Perhaps in the next game, make an agreement about time limits. If it is your habit however to make unnecessary noise and movements, you should try to get rid of them because you might get misunderstood. You might be branded as a cheater.
